Adventure, sports, and lifestyle photographer
I grew up in Juneau, Alaska. A relatively small city with no roads in or out of town. After graduating high school I moved to the lower 48 states so that I could explore and take as many road trips as possible. After finishing college in Oregon I became interested in photography and started bringing my camera with me while doing the sports that I loved. One thing led to another and now I have my dream career traveling the world photographing amazing athletes in beautiful locations.
Do You Have A Good Tip For Us?
People and objects move fast, don’t be afraid to really crank up your shutter speed to capture your subject in as much detail as possible.
Edge of a Cliff and Edge of My Comfort Zone
Every year I travel to a small town in the middle of Utah to shoot my favorite event of the year. The Red Bull Rampage freeride mountain biking contest. This event is invite only with roughly 15 riders competing each year. The athletes spend a week on the steep desert slopes building the most impossible mountain bike lines. They usually consist of massive jumps, mind-blowing cliff drops, and steep technical riding sections.
In order to properly photograph the action, I need to put myself where they are, and that usually means standing precariously on a cliff with no less than a 50 foot free fall below me.
I’m not afraid of heights, but being on the cliff with thousands of dollars of camera gear strapped to your body is a bit of a nerve wracking experience. I usually do my best to dig one hand into the rock face while sticking my other hand out with a fisheye lens to capture the size of the landscape. Every year I have a few slips which rattle my brain and make me question what i’m doing, however each year I keep going back and looking forward to it more and more.
The moral of the story is never be afraid to put yourself on the line to capture the image that you want. Just maybe, take a bit of care while you’re doing it.
What’s In Your Bag?
My bag is an f-stop Tilopa. The most rugged and durable camera bag that I can find.
Inside I typically have two Canon bodies (they vary depending on situation), a 15mm fisheye, 24-70mm 2.8, 50mm 1.2, 70-200mm 2.8 and a 300mm 2.8. I always keep plenty of spare cards and batteries and usually have lens wipes and rocket blower as well.
Depending on the shoot i’ll use my BlackRapid Double Breathe dual harness or a BlackRapid Curve strap.

I’m Australian born, currently living and working in Los Angeles by way of NYC. I’ve been a working photographer for 17yrs. I can’t imagine not doing photography. Though I have a Creative Agency and a photography agency for people to hire other photographers, I still shoot regularly.
Women on the Roof!
This was one of the hardest shoots I ever did. I was commissioned to shoot a double-page ad for Angeleno Magazine. I was told it would be 18 women, it’s a large magazine, a double-page ad, I thought, yes I can make that work, 9 women per page. My team and I did a fantastic mood board for it and the women would be in couture fashion poolside. The news got out about the shoot and more women wanted to be in it. I was hoping not too many more since I had carefully crafted the whole thing.
Oh and to throw another challenge, they scheduled the shoot outdoors on a building rooftop at 12noon . There was no way for me to change it, I tried. I prepared the best I could, rented larger transmitters, and planned to blast the strobe lighting from across the pool. The day of the shoot came and 36 women showed up in couture evening gowns ready to shoot. I was given a 30mins lighting set-up and 30mins to place, art direct and do the shoot. They all had places to be ;).
Here’s the result below. Sometimes you don’t always get the luxury to do it the way you want, but stay confident and go for it!
Here’s a Pro Photo Tip
Stay engaged, creatively motivated, and shoot less, prep more. (even if it’s digital shoot as if it’s a roll of film, get it right in the first 3 frames)
What is in your bag?Two BlackRapid Straps: my go-to Nicole Elliot BlackRapid Sling and a Groovy BlackRapid 70’s strapCanon 1DX3-4 lens: 85mm L-Series 24-105mm L-Series, a wide angle, and sometimes my 70-200mmI also keep dragging around a new Fuji XT3 that I’m trying to get better using.

Blackrapid is an excellent resource to study different pro photography mentors. My grampa worked in industry and as a child I saw Hasselblads and soon took courses around awarded National Geographic photographer who taught at college. My passion to learn better business approach and how to establish agent in photojournalism and landscape or some add shoots is a hope and Black Rapid is a great resource. I grew up in a family of WGA awarded global documentary producers and storytelling is important to me whether in still or 4k video shoots and I study cameras like others study race car statistics!! Thank you Black Rapid!!
